How much does the oil filter last?

Oil filters need to be changed timely to ensure the good health of engine oil and the engine itself. If your vehicle’s engine oil doesn’t last long, you probably use the wrong oil filter or poor-quality oil.

Wix oil filters last up to 3,000 to 5,000 miles under normal driving conditions with a conventional type of oil. In severe driving conditions with conventional or synthetic, or semi-synthetic oil, they may last up to 3,750 to 10,000 miles.

On the other hand, K&N oil filters last up to 10,000 miles.

Compatibility With Vehicles

Not every oil filter fits all vehicles. Different oil filters are designed for different vehicles and yield the best results when used according to the vehicles they are designed.

Wix oil filters are designed for cars, buses, and trucks. Whereas K&N oil filters were initially designed for racing and off-road vehicles.

Over the years, the company has worked a lot and has designed oil filters compatible with cars, trucks, racing cars, off-road vehicles, motorbikes, watercraft, etc.

Compatibility With Oil

Apart from the fit, the oil filter also needs to be compatible with the type of oil used in your vehicle. These days, there are many oil filters available, and some of them are compatible with only a specific type of oil.

Wix oil filters are suitable for both synthetic and conventional types of oil. On the other hand, K&N oil filters are also suitable for both oils but work best with denser oils.

Filter Media

Filter medium plays a major role in trapping the dirt particles from the oil. Wix oil filters use glass-enhanced filter media with greater efficiency than synthetic and cellulose media.

K&N oil filters use synthetic-based filter media inside most of the oil filters. Synthetic-based filter media is less porous than glass enhanced media and is somewhat less efficient.

Anti Drain Back Valve

In the case of the difference based on the anti-drain-back valve, both Wix and K&N oil filters stay at the same level. Both of these companies’ oil filters have silicon-type anti-drain back valves.

Different models have different prices as per their performance. Wix oil filters are a bit costly as compared to K&N oil filters. Most customers have found K&N filters to be available at affordable prices.

Bottom Line

Wix started its journey in 1939 and rolled out its first oil filter between 1949 and 1954. Since then, it has developed as a leading brand of oil filters. On the other hand, K&N started its journey of manufacturing oil filters in 1969 and has been rolling exclusive quality oil filters since then.

It is always advisable to go for the oil filter per your vehicle’s owner manual.
