Over-tightening your oil plug is a common problem. You need to change the engine oil after a while, which requires removing your oil plug. Some people accidentally over-tighten the drain plug, making it difficult to remove it the next time. 

An oil plug is used to prevent your oil from leaking or draining. It should be correctly tightened so that no oil leaks from your engine occur. When you overtighten the oil plug, you put too much pressure on the thread, which might cause problems the next time you change the oil. 

Let us look at some of the possible causes of oil plug over-tightening.  

Causes Of an Over Tightened Oil Plug

This is the most common reason for being unable to dislodge your oil plug. Sludge is a viscous liquid of fuel, water, carbon, and metallic particles. It forms when the oil plug is not thoroughly cleaned after changing the oil. When the excess oil around the oil plug is heated with grease molecules, it creates a coating of sludge around the oil plug, making it difficult to open. 


This happens when you have not serviced your car or have not driven it for several days. Rust can build around your oil plug if it comes into contact with water for any reason. Rust accumulates around the oil plug, causing it to overtighten. 

Over Tightening 

This could have happened while changing the oil in your car. When you or your mechanic put back the oil plug after draining the oil, the plug may have been over-tightened. 

Effects of Over-Tightening Your Oil Plug 

  • Damage the threads of the oil plug. 
  • It can cause harm to the rubber gasket or screw heads. 
  • Difficulty replacing the oil the next time. 
  • This can result in a cracked O-ring, which increases the risk of oil leaking. 

How To Fix an Over-Tightened Oil Plug 

Use Lubricant 

Applying lubrication can assist you in preventing sludge deposits around your oil plug. Make sure to use a high-quality lubricant for this.   


  1. Spray the lubricant on the oil plug, ensuring it gets all the way around it. 
  2. Let it rest for 1-2 hours, and use a wrench to loosen the oil plug. 
  3. If the drain plug is still tight, spray some more oil and try again. 

Ensure that you remove the oil plug gently and with patience, as the inaccurate method may result in the oil plug threads breaking or completely tightening. The most efficient way is to turn the wrench left six times and right once. Make sure to hire a mechanic for this if you don’t have enough experience with these tools. 

Using Hex Key 

First, use a socket wrench to release the tightened drain plug. A 3/8-inch (0.9-centimeter) socket wrench will give sufficient fit over the drain plug. If you need additional power, you can use a hammer tap. You can also use Gator Grip, which is compatible with practically every socket. If that doesn’t work, try using a hex key. 


  1. Spray your hex key with water. 
  2. Twist the oil plug tightly using the hex key. 
  3. Be careful not to use too much force, as this could break the key or damage the gasket. 

Warm up the Engine 

It should be noted that this procedure will only work if you reside in a cold climate and your oil plug has frozen. If your car has been sitting inactive for a prolonged period, there may be rust around the oil plug. You may need to use an anti-rust spray or a high-quality lubricant to remove the rust. 


  1. Start the car and drive it for about a few minutes. 
  2. Ensure that the oil plug gets hot. Make sure not to overheat it. 
  3. Use a wrench to loosen it. 

Using Air Chisel

In an air chisel, High-pressure air slams into a cylinder. This air creates a force in the chisel to move forward. The chisel, in turn, distributes its force to the tool’s head. In most circumstances, this strategy is effective. Don’t set the air pressure above 70 PSI, as excessive pressure can cause the gasket to break. 


  1. Set your air supply’s pressure regulator to 60-70 PSI. 
  2. Place the blade’s corner of the air chisel on the drain plug’s outside surface. 
  3. Fit it to the center of the plug from the left side. 
  4. Gently push it until your blade forms a notch with an oil plug. Reposition the chisel and repeat this step until your plug is loose. 
  5. Once the nut is loose, you can unscrew it using your hands or wrench. 

Steps To Be Taken To Avoid Over-Tightening

Here are some things to keep in mind to avoid the drain plug from being locked:

  1. Gently tighten your oil plug without using too much force. Make sure it’s not too loose and that fit will work. 
  2. After draining the oil, properly reinstall the oil plug, making sure there are no angles. Angles can majorly impact the plug’s threads, resulting in an extra tight grip. 
  3. Change your motor oil regularly to avoid sludge formation around the drain plug. 
  4. Tighten your oil plug with a wrench or spanner, as you may apply extra force with your hands.
